Precious metals are simply metals that are much more rare than other types and have taken on a high monetary value in society.  No matter that continent you are on, gold and silver are universally valued very highly and have been used as currency for hundreds of years.  Gold and silver are composed on just one element and that is why they are considered precious.  Other alloys, or metals that are mixed with one or more types of metal, are not pure and have been created for the purpose of improving their mechanical properties.  Gold and silver are generally much softer than other metals and do not have many structural applications that they can be used.  They are often used in dental applications but are most commonly seen used in jewelry.  Precious metals are composed of minerals and serve as the basis for our currency system, meaning they are essential to our daily life.
